BIRDING IN CAMBODIA AND LAOS DECEMBER 2018 - JANUARY 2019
Sunday 23rd December 2018
Kratie Wetlands / Kampi and Mekong River / Mondulkiri and Keo Seima
This morning at dawn we drove again to the weaver site 4km north of Kratie. We had a bit more time to check the weavers, and eventually we were able to pick out a few Asian Golden Weavers among the Baya. We then drove about 20km north to Kampi village on the Mekong River. There we transferred to a boat to look for Mekong Wagtail on the many islands scattered throughout the Mekong. The boat went out to some of the larger islands in the Mekong. On the way, we saw the ‘leucopsis’ race of White Wagtail, Spot-billed Duck, Little Ringed Plover, Pied Kingfisher, Striated Heron and Grey-throated Martins, but no Mekong Wagtails! Time was getting on and we were getting a bit worried.

Chea asked the boatman to go another area with smaller islands. In fact, some of the ‘islands’ were no more than small rocks with trees and bits of vegetation sticking out of the water. This turned out to be ideal habitat, because we soon picked up a Mekong Wagtail singing in a tree. We went a bit closer and saw another one. Great relief all around! On the way back, we had some nice views of the strange Irrawaddy Dolphins.

After lunch, we headed towards our base at Mondulkiri in the south-east. Before arriving we had a quick look in some forest just off the road at Keo Seima between kilometres 157 and 159. Here we saw some amazing Black-shanked Douc monkeys. This was a good place too for Barbets, with the rare Red-vented Barbet as well as Lineated Barbet, Green-eared Barbet and Blue-throated Barbet seen in one area. Other birds included Chestnut-headed Bee-eater and Streaked Spiderhuter. We heard Germain’s Peacock Pheasant further along the track, but did not see any. Later we stopped at a viewing point where Green Peafowl often come to roost at dusk, and we eventually saw two Green Peafowl in trees. Also at this stop, we saw three Great Slaty Woodpeckers displaying way off in the forest, and two Collared Falconets perched in the distance.
